During the winter months I find that I spend a great deal of time riding in doors. If one has ever ridden in doors you know how boring this can be... hell I've written about it several times.
We are in the middle of a major home improvement project that has a completion date of March 20 plus or minus - more on the project and the completion date at another time. So I'm trying to get as much done on this project without letting it become a job.
You know what I mean? This project is fun at the moment, but as it lingers and the completion date gets nearer and nearer all of a sudden this project that is fun becomes a job and quickly turns into the proverbial pain in the ass. So my plan is to do a little each day.
In doing a little each day it allows me to also do a few other things - some people call this "multitasking".. Susan probably thinks of it as "not staying on task", but everyone's entitled to their opinion.
So yesterday to "stay on task", I decided to ride for an hour on the trainer - I theory you can better train on a trainer. So I did..
One secret to riding on the trainer is - Intervals.
Plan an interval of 5 minutes this tempo, 2 minutes this cadence, stand up sit down, rt leg drills, left leg drills, etc. Do something to break up the duration of the ride.
Today's workout consisted of warming up for 10 minutes. This warm up basically consists of five minutes of warming up at a cadence of 95 or higher in an easy gear. Next, this spinning is followed by five standing up 30seconds in a higher gear, and then seated for 30 seconds. (five minutes total).
The main workout phase begins next, it was supposed to be 10 minutes of riding with a heart rate of 134 - 146 bpm in an aero position, followed by 10 minutes at the same intensity in any comfortable position, then followed by 10 minutes again in the aero position, and 10 out with a cool down of 10 minutes. One Hour correct?
Thats what i did. So exciting.
Not really, because intervals can only ease the pain of riding in place and taking in the view of ones garage for so long.
My next secret is to watch a movie or something.
This eve's selection was Guy Ritchie's - Rock-N-Rolla - with Gerald Butler.
You see I've been making use of a great feature on our DVR. "Copy to VCR" - well this "Copy to VCR" feature also doubles as "Copy to DVD" feature with the correct set-up. So I've been recording movie, after movie since discovering this about a year ago from HBO, Cinemax, Mystery Channel, etc - all those movie channels. Works great, it will even record the HD channels in Hi-Def I think. It appears to work, but I don't have HiDef in the garage so I wouldn't really know.
Rock-N-Rolla is about crooks and honor among thieves or lack there-of. It reminds me a lot of Pulp Fiction. It's pretty damn good funny at times, and very entertaining - with a very cool soundtrack. I suggest you check it out if you get a chance.
Now before one says how did I watch an entire movie in an hour.. Well I didn't. I've watched it over multiple sittings. As I've stated before sitting on a trainer for an hour is one thing, sitting on it for two is entirely something else. That takes fortitude which I did not have on this date.
Also I'm going to give a shout out to Jim for the Best Of Collection he sent me - Morgantown Democracy. I'll try to discuss it tomorrow.
Today I managed to jog before work, and tonight I plan to go to the Y for a hulking workout, and then back home to work on the Project.
BTW - that first pic is my actual GPS route, it is not a public route, but if you would wish to duplicate it please contact me first and I'll let you ride it.
The deadline is the end of February. NOT march 20.
